CIL Fitness Center Comes Alive

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Pete Plotchev with weight machinesDick Sarns, NuStep’s CEO, donated a T5XR—a new exercise machine that enables people with disabilities to engage in exercise in revolutionary ways—to the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living (Ann Arbor CIL) on December 15th 2009.

Since the donation, the machine has been making an impact.  Pete Plotchev, who has a spinal cord injury and uses the CIL’s weight room, states, “the NuStep is great. There isn’t another machine like it.  As a paraplegic it’s really difficult to do cardio, but with the NuStep, I can do cardio. The whole gym here is completely accessible; I can get a full workout with weights and cardio.  Not many gyms offer that.”

Ann Arbor CIL staff member Anna Dusbiber-Gossage, who has cerebral palsy, has limited mobility. She states, “the NuStep has changed my life, and I’ve only been using it for a month and a half. I’ve never been able to get exercise in this way.  Before I started using the machine, I used to only be able to stand without my wheel chair for 1 minute.  Now I can stand for 3 minutes.  My posture is better now, too.”

The CIL has a fully accessible weight room.  The machine itself has had an immense impact on the liveliness of the weight room at the Ann Arbor CIL.  Not only has the T5XR joined the fitness center to form a cohesive gym, but the machine also spurred a Fitness Marathon to keep individuals motivated.

The T5XR reflects NuStep’s mission statement of “inspiring individuals to engage in active living.”  An Ann Arbor-based company, NuStep actively partnered with the Ann Arbor CIL with this donation to build upon both organizations’ core missions of “transforming lives.”

The Ann Arbor CIL wishes to especially thank Dick and Norma Sarns, Trevor Young, and Matt Weber, who made the contribution possible.  A certificate of appreciation was presented to NuStep on February 17th .

The fitness room is great and open to the public. Especially for people with disabilities that cant access accessible fitness equipment. All it takes is an initial orientation of the equipment and then people are welcome to come in and use it when it is available.
