Glen Ashlock & Adam Rose Inducted into Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame

Glen AshlockOn Thursday, Ann Arbor CIL Sports & Rec Director Glen Ashlock was inducted into the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame. Glen was honored for his impressive career as a leading athlete in both wheelchair basketball and handcycling, as well as for his many years serving as an advocate and role model for individuals with disabilities.

In 1997, Glen helped lead the Michigan Thunderbirds to the Division II NWBA National Championship where he was named to the first All-Tournament team. Glen and his Thunderbird teammates finished second in the Division I National Championship tournament in 2003 and were honored by the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame with its Athletes of the Year Award.

Glen Ashlock in Basketball uniformIn 2004, he was a member of the USA World Challenge Wheelchair Basketball Team and served as an alternate for the US Paralympic wheelchair basketball team.

As a handcyclist, Glen has won six marathons and nine additional races. He has competed in the Detroit Marathon every year since the inception of the handcyle division. Glen has competed in sled hockey and wheelchair softball, and he also participates in waterskiing, tennis, and canoeing.

Glen helped establish and is the Sports & Recreation Program Director at the Ann Arbor CIL where he started the IRide, the only multi-day, fully inclusive cycling event in Michigan. He is also a member of the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Coalition.

Adam RoseAnn Arbor CIL Sports Enthusiast Adam Rose was also honored by the Hall of Fame on Thursday as a “Rising Star.” At the age of 16, Adam has already accomplished many feats most adults only dream of, and as a young athlete, he has forged new ground by competing in races traditionally only open for adults.

Adam finished first in the 2010 Detroit Free Press Marathon and in earlier years has been the youngest athlete to compete in any division. He has achieved top 5 finishes at many other competitive races including the the Air Force Marathon and the Crim Race. Adam has competed in over 25 long-distance handcycling races. He also is a leader in competitive wheelchair basketball and has participated at the National Paralympics Academy. Adam is a Junior at Henry Ford II High School in Sterling Heights.

The Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame recognizes and honors men and women who have overcome physical challenges to become elite athletes and superior role models.  Established in 1999, the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame has recognized nearly 100 individuals who share a passion for life and a dedication to inspire others through their words, actions and giving back to the greater community.
